The first week of July, this past summer, brought me to Holden for the first time. While enjoying the majesty of the eastern Cascades and the spirit of the Village, I led Bible studies on the summer’s theme, “Water Washed, Spirit Borne.” Rather then directly examining baptism, we reflected upon biblical stories of passage through water.
We explored First Testament crossing narratives as primal archestypes of deliverance (crossing the Red Sea in Exodus 14-15 and the crossing the River Jordan in Joshua three and four). Such stories are fundamental to the consciousness of Second Testament writers. Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism of repentence in the Jordan, for example, or Mark’s narrative of the disciples’ stormy seas crossings. Indeed, said Paul, “Our ancestors…all passed through the sea.”
Let us look more closely at the Markan sea crossings…
