Pacific Life Community’s work of protest focuses on the human impact of Vandenburg Air Force Base (VAFB). I wish to locate this conversation in specific time and space, in order to call attention to the fact that the primal victims of the work done at Vandenburg have always been indigenous peoples.
Human beings have dwelled on the central coast of California anywhere between 12,000 and 25,000 years. In fact, the oldest human remains that have been found in North America were from Santa Rosa Island, just off the coast of Ventura (top of picture at right). A small carving of a toad made of local stone found in Ojai is considered to be the earliest work of art found on our continent.
